Just a few tips to keep you and yours happy and healthy during this heat wave.

  • Drink plenty of fluid.  Dehydration can creep up on you especially during very hot weather.  Make sure you drink regularly even if you don’t feel thirsty.  Avoid caffeine and alcohol.
  • Spend more time indoors where there is air conditioning.  If you don't have air conditioning at your residence or home try to spend time at places like malls, libraries or insurance agencies where there is plenty of cool air.
  • Wear light colored clothing.  Loose fitting clothing that is lightly colored or white is the best type of clothing to wear during the heat.
  • Do not leave pets or children in parked vehicles.  The temperature in an automobile can become deadly in a matter of minutes.  Always remember this when you close that car door.
  • Make sure pets have plenty of water and shade.  Both are necessary for survival during a heat wave.
  • Wear sunscreen.  What does sunscreen have to do with the heat?  Chances are during a heat wave the sun will be beating down.  When you receive sunburn it disrupts your body’s ability to shed heat.  It also causes a loss of body fluids.  Both of these help protect you from the heat so keep the sunscreen handy!
  • Take it easy!  Try to pace yourself if you’re in the heat.  When working or exercising start slow and easy and build up the intensity.  If you feel light headed, weak or confused stop immediately and get to a cooler location.
  • Keep an eye on the vulnerable.  Keep a close eye on young children, older adults and those with compromised immune systems as they are they most susceptible to heat related illnesses.
  • Know the warning signs!  Know the symptoms of heat overexposure.  Pale skin, headache, nausea or vomiting, becoming semi-conscious or passing out, muscle cramps and confusion or disorientation are things to look for.
  • Drink plenty of fluid.  Dehydration can creep up on you especially during very hot weather.  Make sure you drink regularly even if you don’t feel thirsty.  Avoid caffeine and alcohol.
Stay safe!!
